MCS 203 syllabus: the 4 study blocks on eGyanKosh

The MCS 203 study material is available on eGyanKosh as four study blocks. These blocks cover the core concepts of Operating Systems, a 4-credit course. Block 1 introduces Operating Systems and Process Management, laying the foundation for the subsequent topics. Block 2 then builds on this by covering Memory Management, File Management, and Security. This block expands on how operating systems manage resources and protect data.

Block 3 moves to Advanced Topics in Operating Systems, which requires understanding the earlier blocks. Finally, Block 4 presents Case Studies, allowing learners to see how the concepts from Blocks 1, 2, and 3 apply in real-world scenarios. The MCS 203 book PDF for each block is available for download from eGyanKosh.

The 4 blocks hold 15 units between them:

  1. Block 1: Introduction to Operating Systems and Process Management
    • Unit 1: Operating System: An Overview
    • Unit 2: Processes
    • Unit 3: Interprocess Communication and Synchronization
    • Unit 4: Deadlocks
  2. Block 2: Memory Management, File Management and Security
    • Unit 1: Memory Management
    • Unit 2: Virtual Memory
    • Unit 3: I/O and File Management
    • Unit 4: Security and Protection
  3. Block 3: Advanced Topics in Operating Systems
    • Unit 1: Multiprocessor Systems
    • Unit 2: Distributed Operating Systems
    • Unit 3: Mobile Operating Systems
  4. Block 4: Case Studies
    • Unit 1: Case Study 1- Windows 10
    • Unit 2: Case Study-Linux
    • Unit 3: Case Study- Android
    • Unit 4: Case Study-iOS

MCS 203 question papers and the term-end exam

IGNOU posts previous term-end question papers for MCS 203 on its Previous Question Papers page. These papers are arranged by programme and course. The term-end examinations are held twice a year, in June and December.

The examination fee for a theory course like MCS 203 is Rs. 200 per course (December 2026 TEE). Learners may write the exam in Hindi even if they registered in English medium, except for language programmes (December 2026 TEE). Hall tickets are uploaded on the University website and are not sent by post (July 2026).

Only term-end theory exams can be re-evaluated; projects, practicals, workshops, assignments, or seminars are not eligible. A copy of the answer script costs Rs. 100 per course (January 2026). For early declaration of results, Indian students pay Rs. 1000 per course, provided they have proof of selection for a post or further studies (January 2026). Bachelor’s and Master’s students who are within 2% marks of a 2nd or 1st division may improve their division, with one opportunity only (January 2026). The University provides numerical marks and division (I, II or Pass) for bachelor’s and master’s degrees upon request (July 2026).
